3. Explanation
UKRI ships and Antarctic stations are subject to low bandwidth connections (1/50th of the speed an average user gets at home) to the internet. As a result, BAS cannot utilise cloud-based systems to run processes across UKRI remote locations; the connection is too slow (i.e. staff in Antarctica cannot generally access UKSBS). The IBM Maximo infrastructure has been implemented to resolve this issue. The system provides data replication and allows each remote site to work independently of the internet. The BAS IBM Maximo is therefore the only option to run critical processes assuredly across UKRI remote polar sites and BAS Cambridge. SRO also own the intellectual property to the replication engine and are the only supplier able to support it, this is pivotal to enable deployment to Antarctic stations / ships
