3. Explanation
•The Met Office is the Government recognised body for facilitating forecasting services and support similar organisations in remote and extreme weather locations such as British overseas territories including Ascension Islands, Saint Helena and the Falkland Islands. Many of these locations are remote and have similar local weather challenges and requirement for forecasts as Rothera. •The systems used for forecasting from Rothera Research station in support of the BAS flying and field campaigns and seasons are supported by Met office software and Met Office provisioned global weathermodels that include detailed modelling for Antarctica, increasing resilience and safety. •The Met office facilitates forecasters and forecasting services for other Government departments including the Ministry of Defence. The Met office is contracted to support the MOD at the Falklands based military Station in Mount Pleasant Airport, where there are synergistic weather environments to Rothera and similarities in dynamic and changing weather as well as an emphasis on constant review of conditions to allow for utilisation of manageable weather windows.
